Fix Head Movement with This Hitting Warm-Up Drill

Use this simple drill to help young hitters keep their eyes on the ball

Keep your eyes on the ball!

It’s a message nearly every young baseball or softball player has heard at some point — shouted from the dugout, echoed from the stands, or shared during a backyard game of catch.

With this quick tip, Scott Vatter of HitStreak breaks down a simple—but powerful—drill designed to help hitters keep their head still and eyes on the ball throughout the swing.

As Scott explains, one of the most common issues he sees with young hitters is too much head movement as they swing. The moment the head starts drifting or pulling off the ball, it becomes much harder to make consistent, solid contact.

This warm-up drill doesn’t even require a ball. Start in a good, athletic position with your eyes locked on the tee. As you begin to take smooth, easy swings, focus on rotating your body around your head rather than letting your head move with the swing. The body moves—but the head stays still.

It may sound simple, simple is the key.

Hitting a round ball with a round bat squarely is one of the hardest things to do in sports. By keeping the head stable and the eyes locked in, hitters can improve their balance, timing, and ability to track the ball, giving themselves the best chance for solid, repeatable contact.

Drill Benefits:

  • Keeps eyes on the ball

  • Improves balance and body control

  • Improves pitch tracking and timing

  • Builds better swing consistency

Whether you’re new to the game or working to fine-tune your swing, this drill is an excellent addition to any hitter’s warm-up routine.

Players of all ages and skill levels can benefit from HitStreak’s instructional camps & clinics or private instructional lessons designed to help athletes build confidence, consistency, and success at the plate.
